With so much excitement surrounding tomorrow’s Y’allentine’s Day dance party, we thought we’d to the source and ask some Hoechella folks for more details. Here’s what Page, Nicole, Kari, and Brittany had to say about a brand new holiday that invites everyone celebrate.
Tell us about Y’allentine’s Day?
Y’allentine’s Day is a pre-Valentine’s day dance party that celebrates all healthy relationships, sexual orientations, and identities. It also is serving as a fundraiser to keep Hoechella free for the third year in a row. Valentine’s day isn’t easy for a lot of people. We wanted to create a celebratory, inclusive event that encompasses all healthy relationships regardless of orientation or gender identity.
What can we expect?
A pretty lit dance party with DJ Celsius at Nightcaps from 7 PM to 11 PM on Tuesday, February 13, where anyone can be in control of the playlist. A themed cocktail to commemorate the night. And Guerilla Lovefare.
What is Guerilla Lovefare?
Lots of people have love letters lying around that they don’t know what to do with, or letters they write or wish they could but dare not send. We want to give people a chance to read some of their love letters or poems out loud and then donate them to our Guerilla Lovefare Project. They will be recycled in public spaces across the state barring any identifying information. It’s a way to let your love letters live on while you move on.
What is the best part of Y’allentine’s Day?
Y’all is! But really, any chance to get together as a community and just have fun and enjoy one another, we are all about! Shit gets heavy and we want to create a space to help lighten the load.
How will the event benefit Hoechella?
There is a suggested donation of $5, although we want to remain accessible, so if you can’t give $5, give what you can. Hoechella will receive one hundred percent of the door, and one hundred percent of the proceeds from “Be Your Own DJ.” $1 buys you a song request, $3 skips that song to the front of the queue, and $5 buys you three songs played back to back. This fundraiser will help ensure that Hoechella, a music festival and community event created to raise awareness and combat slut shaming, rape culture, and unjust legislation that affects people’s bodily autonomy, will remain free and inclusive. Here’s your chance to contribute to creating that free and inclusive space.
