In its third year, Manifest is once again offering a bold and diverse lineup of bands and artists, highlighting the many femme, trans, and non-binary folks making music today, yet underrepresented in most music festivals. It is anti-corporate, features 25 bands, and runs for two days starting tomorrow.
As a proud media sponsor for Manifest III, Unsweetened Magazine will feature short interviews with bands from this year’s lineup to give you, the Manifest Music Festival lover, all of the reasons to see all of the artists performing.
On Saturday night, don’t miss Henbrain, an experimental, prog rock metal band out of Carborro with a lot of staying power. They’ll play alongside Desert Secretary, Geexella, and Post Pink at the Nightlight.
Who are you and where are you from?
We are Henbrain!! Michelle is from St.Louis, Erika is from Tokyo, Japan, Evan is from Trenton, NJ, Derrek is from Raleigh, NC and Ryan is from Roxboro, NC
Is your city supportive of your music?
Henbrain has been around since 2010, but people still come to see us, so that’s cool.
How would you describe your music?
We try to make it indefinable, but basically, ass-kicking, but very melodic, heavy, quasi-prog.
Describe your first show.
Different lineup except for Evan and not very serious. Featured drunken wrestling matches with our first drummer, Sam.
Your last show?
Totally serious, newer lineup. 40% of the band needed to regurgitate halfway through the set as we went ham, to use a common expression. We have no guitar and two basses, and still shredded Iron Maiden’s “Run to the Hills.”
What’s so great about Manifest III?
It accentuates feminine talent and power in music, as opposed to the traditional bro-fest.
What do you have coming up?
We are planning to release a new album soon!!
What are a few things you’d like everyone to know about your music?
Henbrain will never half-ass it on stage and is the most honest, real thing around, and we can prove it.
Who are you looking forward to seeing at Manifest III?
As many bands as I can. There are no slouches. I don’t have a car or much $$$, so I only get to see other bands when we play out. I know Pie Face Girls, Spookstina, Bangzz and Fruit Snack are hella dope.
Why do you love/hate the South?
I love that it’s understood tea is sweet, fried okra and all the fried stuff. I hate the preponderance of insects, heat, humidity and prejudice.
What is the last goddamn thing the South needs more of?
Dixiecrats and anyone with an (R) by their name in congress
When is the revolution? Will it be bloody or bloodless?
We’ll see after the next two elections, rigged and as they are. I don’t know any women, poc or lgbtq that aren’t fucking disgusted with the bullshit. As satisfying as widespread bloodshed would be, I don’t know anybody who owns a tank or a fighter jet. We need to . . . well, we shouldn’t publicly disseminate strategy.
