Midlands Gives is a day for the midlands to give back to their community; for 24 hours on May 3rd, we come together as one community to raise awareness and funds for our local nonprofits.
Auntie Bellum’s staffers have chosen a few of the many midlands charities to highlight in the week leading up to Midlands Gives.
Roxy’s Choice: The Women’s Shelter
The Women’s Shelter was established in 1991 to provide housing for homeless women in the midlands and the tools and skills to become healthy, safe, and self-sufficient. By providing temporary and transitional housing, The Women’s Shelter helps women find employment, learn valuable budgeting skills, and create a path for healthy relationships and homes.
With only four full-time employees, The Women’s Shelter relies heavily on community donations to maintain their extensive programming. Once a resident is enrolled in transitional housing, she can spend up to two years in the program creating a strong foundation for her future: repairing credit, pursuing educational goals, and rebuilding relationships. Recently, The Women’s Shelter has begun assisting former residents with home ownership opportunities. The Women’s Shelter also provides on-site counseling and programs for budgeting, parenting, self-care, relapse prevention, and more.
Donations and community volunteers make The Women’s Shelter possible. If you need any convincing of the amazing work they do, check out their archive of newsletters featuring stories from past and present residents. On May 3, consider The Women’s Shelter as part of your Midlands Gives donation.
