Y’all. I’m gonna be real honest here. I took a Xanax and drank a double bourbon last night because this has been a shitshow. My eyes are swollen and my sinuses are full. I am grieving because despite the fact that not all Trump supporters are filled with searing hatefulness, some are. And that is terrifying. Trump getting elected will embolden the hatred that runs within the Trump campaign. Do not deny it. People’s lives depend on us collectively acknowledging it and working against it.
Our hearts grieve for all those who are genuinely fearful for their lives or the lives of their loved ones. We are concerned for our LGBT+ friends, our friends of color, our friends of Muslim faith, ALL our female friends (especially those who have been survivors of assault). And even though many, many Trump supporters voted for him based upon values he purports to uphold (though not for him personally) it still sends a message about which beliefs actually brought people to the polls.
To those who are frozen in fear today, we see you. WE SEE ALL OF YOU. We are sending out the three finger salute, Rue. Hatred will not lead us. Love will. We saw it when the Confederate flag came down last year. We saw it when ALL marriages finally became legal. We saw it when Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. We see it in the work Auntie Bellum does to collaborate and showcase so many amazing groups throughout the South. And if you don’t see that light, BE IT. It is now incumbent upon ALL of us to actively fight against this hatred. Trump supporters, this means you, too.
All right Southerners, it’s time to break bread and make sure that y’all truly means all.
