As we anticipate the House vote today to remove the Confederate flag at the statehouse and the flag’s historic furling later this week (fingers crossed), let’s remember how powerful and encouraging our community has been the last few weeks. This past weekend in particular was a great example. I heard it from everyone, “This is the best way to spend Independence Day.” Activists old and new, families, and state leaders gathered for not just impassioned and moving speeches but also some kick-ass performances. It was so awesome to see Debbie and the Skanks on the State House steps. This band embodies real Southern grit and is made up of some of Columbia’s best musicians and the powerhouse voice and personality of Deborah Adedokun. You can find their EP on their Bandcamp: debbieandtheskanks.bandcamp.com.
